OUR MISSION

CommuniKeys empowers non-speaking autistic adults to participate meaningfully in community life by supporting communication access, sensory-informed understanding, and real-world opportunities for learning, contribution, and belonging.

Through small-group experiences in community and outdoor environments, CommuniKeys helps participants develop the skills, confidence, and regulation needed to access and participate in everyday life. Programs focus on practical engagement in real environments rather than isolated instruction, allowing participants to build familiarity and confidence through repeated participation.

CommuniKeys believes that community inclusion is not achieved through observation alone. It is built through meaningful participation, contribution, and shared experiences in the environments where life happens.

WHO WE SERVE

Our community is open to adult individuals with communication differences who do not rely on speech as their primary method of interaction. We welcome families, caregivers, and allies who share our vision of an inclusive and supportive environment.

VISION

CommuniKeys envisions a world where non-speaking autistic adults are fully included in community life and recognized as capable contributors within their communities.

In this future, individuals with communication differences are not isolated or underestimated. Instead, they are active participants in community spaces such as parks, businesses, recreation environments, and cultural activities. Their ideas, preferences, and perspectives are respected and valued.

CommuniKeys works toward communities where belonging is not an exception but an expectation.

PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY

CommuniKeys programming is grounded in the belief that meaningful growth happens through real-world participation rather than isolated classroom or therapy settings.

Programs are built using the CommuniKeys Life Scaffold Model, which provides structured experiences that help participants gradually build confidence and independence in community environments.

Participants grow through the CommuniKeys Participation Pathway, which includes four stages:

Exploration → Engagement → Skill Development → Contribution

Individuals may move between these stages depending on the activity, environment, and their personal goals. This flexible approach reflects the belief that growth is dynamic and individualized rather than linear.

Through repeated participation in supportive environments, individuals build familiarity with community spaces and develop the confidence needed to participate more fully in everyday life.

SENSORY INFORMED UNDERSTANDING

CommuniKeys recognizes that human behavior, learning, and communication are deeply connected to sensory processing.

CommuniKeys programs are designed with an understanding of the eight sensory systems, including:

  • visual

  • auditory

  • tactile

  • olfactory

  • gustatory

  • vestibular

  • proprioceptive

  • interoceptive

By supporting participants in understanding and regulating their sensory experiences, CommuniKeys helps individuals navigate community environments more comfortably and confidently.

Movement, nature engagement, rhythmic activities, and creative experiences are often incorporated into programming because they support regulation and engagement for many participants.

COMMUNICATION ACCESS

CommuniKeys believes that every individual deserves reliable ways to express their thoughts, preferences, and needs.

Because communication needs vary widely, CommuniKeys supports multiple forms of communication access. These may include:

  • AAC devices

  • visual communication tools

  • letter-based communication systems

  • supported communication strategies

  • other individualized communication approaches

CommuniKeys does not assume a single communication method will work for every individual. Instead, programs prioritize environments where participants can communicate using the systems that work best for them.

Communication access is considered a foundational component of participation and belonging.

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION

CommuniKeys believes that inclusion means more than simply being present in a community environment. True inclusion occurs when individuals are able to actively participate and contribute.

Programs therefore take place in real-world environments such as:

  • parks and outdoor spaces

  • community recreation settings

  • local businesses

  • creative studios

  • gardens and food systems

  • public community spaces

These environments allow participants to practice the skills needed to navigate everyday life while building comfort and familiarity with the places where their communities gather.

CommuniKeys programs intentionally operate in small-group environments, typically supporting between one and five participants at a time. This structure allows staff to provide individualized support while ensuring participants can safely engage with public environments.

CONTRIBUTION AND PURPOSE

CommuniKeys believes that every individual has something valuable to contribute.

As participants grow within the program, they may take on meaningful roles within CommuniKeys activities and community experiences. Examples may include:

  • assisting in gardens

  • supporting events

  • helping guide outdoor activities

  • contributing to program communications

  • assisting with community service projects

These roles help participants experience purpose, responsibility, and belonging within their communities.

The goal of CommuniKeys is not simply participation, but meaningful contribution.

COMMITMENT TO RESPONSIBLE GROWTH

CommuniKeys is committed to growing thoughtfully and responsibly in order to maintain the quality and safety of its programs.

Because CommuniKeys serves individuals with complex sensory and communication needs, programs intentionally maintain small activity groups and strong support structures. Organizational growth is planned in phases so that staffing, partnerships, and training systems can expand alongside participant opportunities.

This approach helps ensure that CommuniKeys programs remain supportive, inclusive, and sustainable as the organization continues to grow.
